Procedure
Complete All Required Tasks
When you receive the IPA, log in to the e-Service for Singpass holder and non-Singpass holder to complete the required tasks. You will officially become a Singapore Citizen only after you complete all your required formalities.
Before you proceed:
- Ensure all entries are accurate. Errors may affect the processing of your application and the issuance of your official documents.
- If you need to upload a photograph, ensure it meets ICA's photo specifications. Avoid using filters or heavy retouching as this can affect facial recognition. Please refer to ICA’s Photo Guidelines for more information on the requirements.
- Do not renounce your foreign citizenship at this stage, until you have downloaded your Final Outcome Letter. Renouncing too early can cause severe complications if your Singapore citizenship application is withdrawn.
Pay Issuance Fees
Once ICA has processed your submissions, you will receive a notification to pay the issuance fees. Upon successful payment, you can download the Final Outcome Letter. Make your online payment by the deadline to avoid having your application withdrawn.
Commence Renunciation of Foreign Citizenship
- This applies only to applicants aged 21 and above.
- After downloading your Final Outcome Letter, you can start the renunciation process of your foreign citizenship with the relevant foreign authority. The 6-month validity of your Final Outcome Letter will be sufficient for most to complete this step.
- Upload the documents stating the initiation and/or completion of your renunciation to the e-Service when you receive them.
- Complete all declarations or acknowledgements in the e-Service.
- If you have family members of different nationalities, the renunciation process at various embassies can be different. Applicants who received IPA as a family unit will be granted citizenship only when all members have met the requirements. If you hold more than one foreign nationality, you must renounce all of them.
Complete Formalities
- Your Final Outcome Letter will state if you must visit the ICA Services Centre in person to complete your formalities. If a visit is required, the letter will include your appointment date and time. If you need to reschedule, you can do so via e-Appointment.
- If you are aged 21 and above, you must take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty during your appointment at ICA. You must wear appropriate attire (refer to your letter for dress code details).
Next Steps After Citizenship is Granted
- Apply for Singapore passport: You can apply for a Singapore passport the next working day.
- Collect Identity Card (IC): We will notify you when your IC is ready for collection (applicable only to those aged 15 and above).
- Complete Renunciation of Foreign Citizenship: Depending on your country of origin, you may need to submit proof of final renunciation. You must complete this within 15 months from the date we grant your Singapore citizenship.
You will receive your Singapore Citizenship Certificate at a ceremony, held about 6 months after ICA grants your citizenship. The sponsor or applicant will receive an email with the event details.
- Minors who are below 21 years old and are granted Singapore citizenship, can hold more than one citizenship till the age of 21. They are required to renounce their foreign citizenship(s) and take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance, and Loyalty before the age of 22 if they choose to keep Singapore citizenship, failing which they will lose Singapore citizenship on the 22nd birthday.
