Apply for Death Extract (Certified True Copy of Death Certificate)

A death extract is a certified true copy of a death certificate. It replaces a lost or damaged death certificate.

You may apply for a death extract if the deceased had passed on in Singapore.

Upon approval, you will receive a digital death extract if a digital death certificate was earlier issued. Otherwise, you will receive a hardcopy extract by registered mail.

ICA Registry of Births and Deaths only maintains records of deaths that occurred in Singapore, which were registered in Singapore since 1872.

Apply Online Information Required and Procedure

You can apply for a death extract online using the e-Service.

Only the following persons are eligible to apply for a death extract:

  • Parent of the deceased
  • Child of the deceased
  • Grandparent of the deceased
  • Grandchild of the deceased
  • Spouse of the deceased
  • Legal guardian of the deceased
  • Sibling of the deceased
  • Solicitor who is acting on behalf of the above listed eligible person(s)

To apply for a death extract, you will need to provide the following information relating to the deceased person:

  • Name (as stated on the death certificate)
  • Sex
  • Date of death
  • NRIC number or Singapore Birth Certificate number (for child without NRIC) or Singapore Death Registration/Certificate number

If you are unable to provide all required information (listed above), you will need to apply for a search for the death record, with the following information:

  • Deceased’s name
  • Deceased’s sex
  • Date of death or an approximate period during which the death had occurred
  • Place or address of death (if available)
  • Last known address (if available)

A search will be performed on the death records that fall within the period specified in your application.

Records of death which occurred overseas will not be available. For such records, please approach the relevant foreign authorities in the country/place where the death occurred.

Fees

The fee for an application of a death extract is S$40.

The fee for an application of a search of death record will be computed based on the search period:

Period of Search Application Fee
Search of records in a register for any period on or after 1 Jan 1986 $40 for the search period
Search of records in a register for any period before 1 Jan 1986 $50 for every month or part of the month in the search period

All application fees (stated above) are non-refundable.

For the online application, you can pay via:

  • Visa or MasterCard (Credit, Debit)
  • American Express (AMEX)
  • Internet direct debit (DBS/POSB, OCBC, UOB and SCB internet banking accounts in Singapore
  • PayNow (for Singpass users)

Processing Time and Collection

The general processing time for a death extract application is within one week.

You will receive a digital death extract if a digital death certificate was earlier issued in respect of the death record. Otherwise, you will receive a hardcopy extract by registered mail.

For hardcopy extracts, the processing time excludes postal delivery time: Local postal delivery time generally takes two to three days and international postal delivery time is dependent on the foreign postal service. If you wish to collect the extract at ICA Building, you may indicate the request under the section “For comments or elaborate reason for application” during the application.

For a search application, the processing time is within three (3) weeks. Depending on the period of search, some applications may take longer to process. When the search is successful, you will be informed via email to apply for the death extract.
