Two Illegal Immigrants Arrested for Supplying Illegal Workers
On 9 Sep 2004, ICA officers mounted an operation against an illegal employment syndicate and arrested two Indian nationals for supplying illegal workers to work at food establishments in Singapore. Following their arrests, checks were conducted simultaneously at food outlets at Thomson Road, Telok Blangah Road, Scotts Road, Merchant Road and Orchard Road. Fourteen illegal workers were successfully arrested by ICA officers at these premises. All of them were immigration offenders (including both illegal immigrants and overstayers).
2 Preliminary investigations revealed that the two male Indian nationals supplying the illegal workers, aged 32 and 37 years old, were illegal immigrants themselves. The fourteen immigration offenders caught working illegally were aged between 22 and 52 years old. They were all male Indian nationals employed to work as cleaners and dishwashers at the food outlets.
3 Under the Immigration Act (Cap 133), the punishment for overstaying and illegal entry is a jail term up to six months and caning of at least 3 strokes. The punishment for employing immigration offenders is a jail term between six months and two years and a fine up to $6000. Employers who employed more than 5 immigration offenders may be caned for the offence.
4 Illegal immigrants pose a security problem in Singapore. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring the security and safety of Singapore. The public is advised not to provide employment or provide them with a place to stay. ICA will not hesitate to take tough actions against harbourers and employers of immigration offenders.
5 Employers can check the validity of work passes on the MOM website at: http://www.mom.gov.sg. Homeowners should also check the immigration status of their prospective tenants. They can make use of VERIFI (VERIfication of Foreigner Immigration Status) and iCHECK (Identity Card Checking Facility) to verify the immigration passes and NRICs of their prospective tenants respectively. The VERIFI and iCHECK services are available at ICA's website: http://www.ica.gov.sg.
6 To help us take action against immigration offenders, members of public with information regarding them can call ICA at Tel: 1800-391 6150 or contact the Police at 999.
