Yucks! The Things People Keep in Their Undies!

CASE 1

On 22 Aug 2005, at about 1945 hrs, a male Malaysian Work Permit holder riding a motorcycle was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint for attempting to smuggle controlled drugs, uncensored VCDs, suspected obscene DVDs and duty-unpaid cigarettes into Singapore.

2 In a routine check by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers, four packets of duty-unpaid Dunhill King Size cigarettes were found underneath the motorcycle seat. Not convinced that these were all, the vigilant ICA officers brought the Malaysian male into the office for a body search, and managed to whisk the remaining items out of their private hiding places.

3 Two 10-tablet slabs (15mg per tablet) of the controlled drug, Dormicum, were found inside the subject's wallet, with another slab of two tablets found inside the subject's left trouser pocket. Probing further, two pieces of VCD and two pieces of DVD, suspected to be uncensored and obscene, were found stuffed in the subject's underwear, ensconced in the crevice of his butt cheek. Two 6-tablet slabs and one 4-tablet slab of Dormicum were also "fished" out from subject's groin area.

4 The Malaysian male admitted ownership of the items found. He claimed to have purchased the drugs from Malaysia, and had intended it for his personal consumption as well as distribution to friends. The VCDs/DVDs were ostensibly for his personal viewing.

5 The Dormicum tablets were handed over to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) who detained the subject for further investigations. The four packets of seized cigarettes were referred to the Singapore Customs, with the subject being dealt a composition fine totalling $250, and the four pieces of VCDs and DVDs were handed over the Singapore Police Force for investigation.

CASE 2

6 Barely 12 hours later at around 0535 hrs (23 Aug 2005), a Singaporean woman was arrested in Woodlands Checkpoint for trying to smuggle in six packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes. Five of these packets were hidden in her undergarment.

7 At the Arrival Bus Hall of Woodlands Checkpoint, this Malay woman was approached by ICA officers for a routine check. When informed, the subject immediately coughed dramatically and even warned that she was going to faint. The concerned ICA officers immediately brought her into the office for a rest. In the office, a search through her bag revealed one 20-stick packet of duty-unpaid Marlboro Lights cigarettes.

9 Flustered, the woman again emphasised that she was going to faint and insisted on leaving. The ICA officers, concerned, yet suspicious, advised her to rest in the office until she felt better. They carefully did a body search and found five other packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes in her panties. The loot consisted of two packets of 20-stick of Peter Styvesant Cigarettes, two packets of 20-stick Dunhill Cigarettes and one packet of Dunhill Menthol Lights Cigarettes.

10 The subject was referred to Singapore Customs and was given a composition fine of $350.

11 As our country's first line of defence against terrorist threats, ICA has a duty to ensure the security and safety of Singapore. We have tightened our security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contraband. In the first six months of this year, we have detected more than 7,000 cases of contraband and illegal goods being imported into Singapore. The cases include offensive weapons, duty-unpaid cigarettes, obscene VCDs as well as endangered species in wild fauna and flora. We would like to advise the public against smuggling unlawful goods into Singapore
