Travellers To Plan Journey When Using Land Checkpoints
The traffic flow passing through the land checkpoints, in particular for car travellers is expected to be very heavy during the coming Chinese New Year period. The peak period is expected to start from 25 Jan 06 to 1 Feb 06. We are expecting 80% more car travellers to use the land checkpoints during this period, as compared to a typical weekday. This will translate into an increase of more than 60,000 car travellers passing through the land checkpoints daily during this festive season. The number of bus travellers passing through Tuas Checkpoint during this period is also expected to double due to many holiday makers taking short trips.
2 Traffic build-up is inevitable, when a large number of travellers want to use the checkpoints at the same time. Members of the public are requested to play a part in helping to ease congestion at the land checkpoints. They can help to minimise the congestion by maintaining lane discipline. They can also help by adjusting their travel plans and avoiding peak periods as far as possible. Travellers are also encouraged to car pool or make use of public transport instead. In addition, they can make sure that they do not bring unlawful or prohibited goods into Singapore as this would affect clearance efficiency and cause inconvenience to other travellers. The list of controlled and prohibited items is set out on the ICA's website.
3 Travellers departing Singapore by land will be able to know in advance the traffic situation at Tuas and Woodlands from the LTA's Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS) installed along AYE and BKE respectively. Travellers can also call the traffic information hotline at 6863-0117 or listen to TrafficWatch on the radio to find out the latest traffic conditions at the land checkpoints. They can also know the latest traffic conditions via Short Message Service (SMS) by dialling *112. This service is provided by Singtel and more information can be found on the website at http://www.ideas.singtel.com.
4 Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security against penetration by terrorists. We have stepped up security checks at all our checkpoints. We now conduct 100% checks on persons, cargo and conveyances that pass through our checkpoints. These security checks are critical to our nation’s security, especially since terrorism remains a clear and present threat to Singapore. We have to remain vigilant, as would-be offenders, including possible terrorists, may try to bring unlawful goods into Singapore, or slip into Singapore to perpetrate criminal or terrorist acts during this peak period.
5 ICA will put in every effort and continue to take the necessary measures to improve clearance efficiency as much as possible without compromising security. We seek the travellers’ understanding and cooperation, as their security is our utmost concern.
