Security at Our Checkpoints

Being the guardian of Singapore’s checkpoints, ICA is acutely aware that our borders are the first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore’s security against possible terrorist attacks. The increased security checks at all our checkpoints are critical to our nation’s security, especially since terrorism remains a clear and present threat to Singapore.

2. ICA now conducts 100 per cent checks on persons, cargo and conveyances that pass through our checkpoints. These enhanced security checks have been effective in helping to detect cases of smuggling illegal goods and illegal immigrants.

3. ICA recognises the fact that security checks take time and have put in all efforts in smoothening the traffic flow at land checkpoints.

Travellers can play a part

4. Travellers should make sure that they do not bring unlawful or prohibited goods into Singapore as this would affect clearance efficiency and cause inconveniences to other travellers.

5. Where possible, they can also help by adjusting their travel plans and avoiding peak periods as far as possible.

6. The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) will be giving DPM Prof. S. Jayakumar an insight into how we secure Singapore’s borders on 9 February 2006. The visit is part of his familiarisation tour as the new Coordinating Minister for National Security.

7. While ICA will be revealing the inner workings of its operations to the Coordinating Minister during his visit, what will remain snug and intact are its tight border security measures.
