In the second case, 400 tablets of Dormicum were found.

Case 1 – Pirate taxi driver modifies his Mercedes for smuggling but…
2 On 23 Mar 2006, at about 1220 hrs, a white arriving Malaysia-registered Mercedes at the Woodlands Checkpoint was singled out for a routine check by ICA officers. In the course of their search, the officers found optical discs stashed in a secret compartment in the glove compartment. A total of of 1304 pieces of VCDs and DVDs, suspected to be obscene and uncensored were found.

3 The driver, a 40-year-old Chinese male Malaysian, admitted knowledge of the hidden discs, but denied ownership of them. He claimed that he was approached by someone in Malaysia to smuggle the VCDs/DVDs into Singapore and had his car modified for this purpose. He also claimed that he was promised RM400 upon successful delivery of the discs. The case was referred to the Singapore Police Force (SPF) for further investigations.

Case 2 – Singaporean caught for smuggling Dormicum at Woodlands Checkpoint
4 On 23 Mar 2006 at around 2240 hrs, a checkpoint officer deployed at Woodlands Checkpoint stopped an arriving Singapore-registered motorcycle for a routine check. In the course of the check, 40 slabs each containing 10 tablets of Dormicum were found under the seat of the motorcycle.

5 When interviewed, the male Chinese Singaporean claimed that the tablets were for his personal consumption and that he had bought them from a clinic in Johor Bahru. He also claimed that this was his first time bringing the tablets into Singapore.

7 ICA has tightened security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contraband. We would like to warn the public to think twice before they attempt to smuggle unlawful goods illegally into Singapore as our officers at the checkpoints maintain a high level of vigilance at all times and are trained to profile potential offenders.
