ICA Scores Hat-Trick against Drug Smugglers

The anguish and anxiety experienced by the renowned Spanish football club Barcelona during its recent goal drought is something that ICA would not be able to identify with, considering the plethora of goals it has been ‘scoring’ against smugglers. On 5 Apr 06, ICA scored three ‘goals’ against drug smugglers when her officers foiled three separate attempts to smuggle drugs into Singapore. Two of the goals were scored at Woodlands checkpoint and another at Changi Airport. These smugglers have learnt that they will lose the game regardless of the ‘stadium’ (i.e. checkpoint) they play in.

2 At about 1950 hours, a Singapore-registered taxi was stopped at Woodlands checkpoint for a routine check. The Singaporean taxi driver had three passengers in his taxi – a male Singaporean aged 32, his Malaysian girlfriend aged 30 and another Malaysian girl aged 21. In the course of the checks, two plastic packages containing a total of 38 Dormicum tablets were found in the pockets of the male Singaporean passenger and his girlfriend. Nothing incriminating was found in the taxi and on the driver and the other female passenger.

3 ICA doubled its goal tally at about 2240 hours. A male Indonesian arriving at Changi Airport was directed to the x-ray machine to have his luggage screened. During the screening, ICA officer noticed images of cigarettes in the Indonesian’s luggage and proceeded to conduct a physical check on the luggage. The officer found five tablets of Erimin-5 in an empty cigarette packet. A search uncovered eight sticks of cannabis, one packet of ICE (about 2 gm), two tablets of Ecstasy , one tablet of Upjohn and seven unknown capsules and tablets hidden in other packets of cigarettes. ICA officers also found drug utensils and 15 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes in his luggage.

4 The 46-year-old Indonesian admitted ownership of the items found in his luggage.

5 ICA increased its lead by scoring another goal at about 2320 hours. The ICA officer stationed at the Arrival Bus Hall at Woodlands checkpoint noticed that a male Singaporean appeared nervous as he was clearing immigration. The ICA officer directed the 31-year-old Singaporean for a thorough check. A body search uncovered a total of 213 tablets of Dormicum that was hidden in the Singapoean’s groin area. Another tablet of Subutex was also found in the man’s wallet.

6 The three cases were referred to Central Narcotics Bureau for further investigations.

7 In view of the current global situation, enforcement agencies at all entry and exit points are working closely together to step up security inspections of all persons, goods and vehicles entering or leaving Singapore. As a result, drug traffickers can also expect to face a heightened gauntlet of security checks and measures at all our entry and exit points.
