Meeting With Malaysian Home Affairs Minister

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Wong Kan Seng welcomed Dato' Seri Mohd Radzi bin Sheikh Ahmad, Minister of Home Affairs, Malaysia, and his delegation at the Ministry of Home Affairs this morning. Minister Radzi is in Singapore for a working visit .

2 During the call, Minister Radzi and DPM Wong discussed matters of mutual interest, including the immigration requirements for travel between the two countries. Malaysia had previously announced that Malaysian Restricted Passports (MRPs) would not be valid for travel after 31 December 2006. In accordance to international practice for all travel documents to have a validity of at least 6 months, the MRP would then cease to be a valid travel document to Singapore with effect from 1 July 2006. At the meeting, DPM Wong agreed to the Malaysian request to extend acceptance of the MRP by 4 months to 31 October 2006, so as to give more time for Malaysian frequent travellers who have been using their MRPs for entry into Singapore, to obtain their Malaysian International Passports.

3 The Malaysian Minister also informed DPM Wong of the concerns of Malaysian frequent visitors that their passports would run out of pages if they are regular visitors. Taking this into consideration, Singapore suggested that it would invite Malaysian frequent travellers to apply for the Immigration Automated Clearance System (IACS) card so that their passports need not be stamped on each visit. Minister Radzi appreciated the offer.
