Drug Trafficker Undone By Smelly Shoes

A Singaporean man tried to smuggle drugs through the Woodlands Checkpoint at 0100 hours on 20 Jul 2006. You would not want to be in his shoes, both figuratively and literally, when checkpoint officers conducted a search on him. The vigilant officers found two small bundles of cannabis weighing about 232g, with a street value of more than S$3,400, inside his shoes.

2 The 24-year-old man was in a Malaysia-registered taxi with a driver and another female passenger when the car was stopped at Woodlands Checkpoint for a routine check. One of the officers had asked the Singaporean man to step out of the taxi and noticed that he was walking in an awkward manner. Sensing something amiss, the officer conducted a check on the man. Two bundles of greenish substance wrapped in newspaper and sealed with white masking tape were found underneath the insoles of his shoes. The greenish substance was suspected to be cannabis, and weighed approximately 232g. The man was immediately arrested and referred to CNB for further investigations.

3 Checks were also conducted on the Malaysian taxi driver and the other passenger, an 18-year-old female Singaporean. Nothing incriminating was found on them. They were also referred to CNB for further investigations.

4 The 24-year-old suspect is unemployed and traced for possession of a controlled drug. His urine tested positive for cannabis. He will be investigated for the offence of importation of a controlled drug. If convicted, he will face a minimum sentence of 5 years imprisonment and 5 strokes of the cane. The 18-year-old female passenger and the taxi driver have been released on bail pending urine analysis by the Health Sciences Authority.

5 In view of the current global situation, enforcement agencies at all entry and exit points are working closely together to step up security inspections of all persons, goods and vehicles entering or leaving Singapore. As a result, drug traffickers can also expect to face a heightened gauntlet of security checks and measures at our entry and exit points.
