A Botched Undercover Job
In the space of less than a week, another “underwear smuggler” has been, um, uncovered. With their series of botched “undercover” attempts, we are glad that they are not working for us.
2. Our officers demonstrate a much higher level of competence. Based on information received, ICA officers pounced on the 37-year-old Singaporean man for further checks, when he arrived at the Bus Arrival Hall of Woodlands Checkpoint on 18 September 2006, at around 9.24pm. The drugs were soon uncovered after a body search. A total of 396 tablets suspected to be controlled drugs were stashed in his underwear.
3. When interviewed, the man admitted ownership of the tablets and said that they were for his own consumption. He claimed to have bought 400 tablets for S$1,200 in Johor Bahru, and had consumed 4 tablets there.
4. The man and drugs were referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau for investigations.
5. ICA has tightened security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contraband. We would like to warn the public to think twice before they attempt to smuggle unlawful goods illegally into Singapore as our officers at the checkpoints maintain a high level of vigilance at all times and are trained to profile potential offenders.
