114 Subutex Tablets Found Underneath Car Floor Mat

An attempt to smuggle 114 tablets of the controlled drug Subutex through Woodlands Checkpoint was foiled by an alert checkpoint officer on 9 Oct 06.

2 On 9 Oct 06 at about 1810 hours, a Malaysia-registered car was singled out for a routine check at the Woodlands Checkpoint Arrival Car Green Channel. The car was driven by a 56-year-old Malaysian man, and he had two Singaporean passengers, a 32-year-old male Malay and a 30-year-old male Malay. In the course of the check, the checkpoint officer lifted the floor mat of the rear passenger seats and found slabs of tablets hidden underneath it. A total of 114 Subutex tablets and 400 tablets suspected to be controlled drugs were seized.

3 The case was referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for investigation. The 32-year suspect is a delivery man while the 30-year-old suspect works as a surveyor. Both suspects tested positive for benzodiazepines and will be investigated for the offence of importation of a controlled drug. If convicted, they will face a minimum sentence of 5 years imprisonment and 5 strokes of the cane. The 56-year-old is a pirate taxi driver and has been detained pending further investigation.
