Woman Jailed For Assuming A False Identity For Immigration Clearance

On 5 October 2016, a 43-year-old Vietnamese woman, Nguyen Thi Bich Lieu, was convicted in Court for contravening Sec 57(1)(k), Sec 6(1)(c) and Sec 28(4)(d) of the Immigration Act. She was sentenced to 10 weeks’ imprisonment and fined $1,500, in default two weeks’ imprisonment.

2.        Investigations revealed that Nguyen had previously entered Singapore on several occasions using a Vietnam passport bearing her real identity. On 19 February 2014, Nguyen was assessed to be ineligible for entry to Singapore and was subsequently sent back to Vietnam. However, that did not stop Ngyuen from coming back to Singapore.

3.        On 18 March 2016, Nguyen arrived at the Changi Airport and produced a Vietnam passport with particulars issued under the name “Do Thi Duc” and date of birth as “1969” for her arrival immigration clearance. Nguyen had also declared on the Disembarkation Form that her name was “Do Thi Duc” and that she had never used a passport under a different name to enter Singapore. She was eventually arrested by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at the Changi Airport Terminal 2 on 16 April 2016 when she attempted to depart for Ho Chi Minh City.

4.        The ICA takes a serious view of attempts to overstay, enter or depart Singapore illegally. We will continue to conduct security checks to ensure that the movement of people, goods and conveyances through our checkpoints is lawful and legitimate.
