Ketamine Smuggler Finds No Solace In Armrest
On 13 Jan 2007, at about 0245 hrs, a Singaporean male was arrested by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at Woodlands Checkpoint for attempting to smuggle in two sachets of ketamine hidden in the armrest of his car. The ketamine sachets seized weighed a total of about 101.5 grams.
2 During a routine check conducted by ICA officers, the Singapore-registered car was directed to the inspection pit for further checks. In the course of the check, a small bundle wrapped in newspaper was found concealed in the armrest of the vehicle. When peeled open, about 101.5 grams of ketamine were seized from the bundle. The 28-year old driver was immediately placed under arrest and referred to CNB for further investigations.
3 Further investigations by CNB revealed the identity of the intended drug recipient and a follow-up operation was mounted to arrest the suspect. At about 0720 hours, CNB officers arrested the suspect, a 20-year-old male Singaporean, in the vicinity of Blk 409 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.
4 The 28-year-old suspect works as a car repossession worker and is traced for intent to defraud customs/excise duty on dutiable tobacco goods. The 20-year-old suspect works as an odd job contractor. Both suspects have been charged for the offence of importation of a controlled drug and abetting the importation of a controlled drug, respectively. If convicted, they will face a minimum sentence of 5 years imprisonment and 5 strokes of the cane.
