ICA Opens New Woodlands Mini Checkpoint
Singapore’s land checkpoints are among the busiest in the world. At Woodlands Checkpoint alone, the total traveller volume for 2006 was about 86 million. Motorcyclists make up an estimated 30 percentage of the total travellers’ volume cleared.
New clearance zone for motorcyclists
2. As part of our commitment to facilitate expeditious immigration clearance of travellers without compromising security at the borders, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) will open an additional clearance zone for motorcyclists with effect from 5 July 2007. This new mini checkpoint will be an extension of the existing Woodlands Checkpoint, and will operate up to five hours daily from 5am to 10am. Actual operating hours will depend on the traffic situation on that day. The Biometric Identification of MotorBikers or BIKES will currently not be available at this new mini checkpoint. Motorcyclists who prefer to make use of automated clearance lanes should continue to use the BIKES lanes at the main Woodlands Checkpoint.
Mini checkpoint, maximised security
3. The opening of the new Woodlands mini checkpoint will help to spread the load of the daily motorcyclists arriving for immigration clearance during the peak periods. With a dedicated clearance zone during these hours, the flow of motorcyclists is expected to be smoother.
4. More importantly, the use of the mini checkpoint also allows us to further tighten the security for clearance of motorcyclists. For example, the design and layout of the mini checkpoint will enable ICA officers to have a clearer view to prevent any evasion of clearance.
Checkpoints are our first line of defence
5. Our checkpoints are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore’s security against penetration by terrorists and other security threats. Security checks at the checkpoints are critical to our nation’s security. ICA will continue to take the necessary measures to improve clearance efficiency without compromising security.
