ASEAN-Australian Workshop on Immigration Training Cooperation

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) of Australia are co-hosting an Immigration Training Cooperation Workshop from 27 to 29 August 2007 at the Sheraton Towers Hotel.

Strengthening cooperation in the region

2 The objective of the workshop is provide a common platform for ASEAN members and Australia to get together to explore and discuss possible immigration training collaborations.

3 The idea for this workshop was first mooted at the ASEAN Directors-General of Immigration Departments and Heads of Consular Affairs Divisions of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs (DGICM) held in Jakarta in 2006. Recognising ICA’s immigration expertise, experience and leadership role played in border security in the region, and its excellent training facility at the Home Team Academy, the DIAC had approached ICA to co-host a workshop on training for our ASEAN counterparts. ICA had agreed as it will strengthen our relations and forge strong ties amongst the ASEAN and Australia immigration agencies.

Effective regional border security

4 “Our staffs are our most valuable resources. Technology, machines, structures and systems are basically just enablers,” said the Commissioner of ICA, Mr Eric Tan at the opening of the workshop.

5 ICA and DIAC believe that enhancing regional cooperation in training is a crucial enabler in the fight against terrorism and syndicated criminal activities that transcend geographical boundaries. It is their objective through such cooperation in sharing training capabilities and resources as well as drawing on the variety of expertise and experiences in the region, to further develop border control officers to thwart the attempts of those who threaten to breach the integrity of countries’ borders.

6 “I look forward to our sharing with participants at the forum Australia’s experience in developing and delivering training in border control, document authentication, and in our progress with the development of our new College of Immigration. I also look forward to this forum exploring ways to strengthen our cooperation across the region to enhance all our skills in delivering our respective programmes. I congratulate the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority of Singapore for co-hosting this important event,” said DIAC Secretary, Mr Andrew Metcalfe.
