Travellers Advised to Plan Journey Before Using Land Checkpoints
With the approach of Hari Raya Haji on 20 December 2007 (Thursday) and Christmas on 25 December 2007 (Tuesday), traffic flow through the land checkpoints at Woodlands and Tuas is expected to be heavy from 19 to 26 December 2007. For departures, the build-up is expected to start from 19 December 2007 (Wednesday) morning. For arrivals, the traffic is expected to be heavy from the afternoon of 25 December 2007 (Tuesday). Travellers intending to use the land checkpoints during the peak periods should take note of the following.
Travellers Have a Part to Play
2. The best way to avoid the congestion is to adjust your travel plans and avoid the peak periods altogether. Traffic build-up is inevitable when a large number of travellers want to use the checkpoints at the same time.
3. If you really need to travel during the peak periods, you can play a part to ease congestion at the land checkpoints by maintaining lane discipline. To avoid the congestion at the checkpoints, you are also encouraged to car-pool or make use of public transport. Singaporean travellers with valid passports and who are registered with the National Registration Office can use the eIACS (Enhanced Immigration Automated Clearance System) lanes at the Bus Halls to clear immigration. The eIACS allows you to clear immigration through automated lanes within 12 seconds at no additional cost.
4. Travellers should also make sure that they do not bring unlawful or prohibited goods into Singapore as this would affect clearance efficiency and cause inconvenience to other travellers. The list of controlled and prohibited items is set out on ICA’s website http://www.ica.gov.sg.
Traffic Information
5. Travellers departing Singapore by land will be able to know in advance the traffic situation at Tuas and Woodlands from the LTA's Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS) installed along AYE and BKE respectively. You can also call the traffic information hotline at 6863-0117 or listen to TrafficWatch on the radio to find out the latest traffic conditions at the land checkpoints. You can also know the latest traffic conditions via Short Message Service (SMS) by dialling *112. This service is provided by Singtel and more information can be found on the website at http://www.ideas.singtel.com.
Security is our Utmost Concern
6. Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security against penetration by terrorists. We have stepped up security checks at all our checkpoints. We now conduct 100% checks on persons, cargo and conveyances that pass through our checkpoints. These security checks are critical to our nation’s security, especially since terrorism remains a clear and present threat to Singapore. We have to remain vigilant, as would-be offenders, including possible terrorists, may try to bring unlawful goods into Singapore, or slip into Singapore to perpetrate criminal or terrorist acts during this peak period.
7. ICA will put in every effort and continue to take the necessary measures to improve clearance efficiency as much as possible without compromising security. We seek your understanding and cooperation, as your security is our utmost concern.
