Response to “Checkpoint re-opening ‘The nightmare will haunt us again’.” (The Straits Times, 24 Dec 2008)

Noise at checkpoint

The Straits Times

I REFER to the letter, 'Checkpoint reopening' by Mr Krishnapillai Raveeohran (Dec 24), and his complaint about noise pollution caused by a public address system at Old Woodlands Checkpoint.

Mr Raveeohran had in fact written to his MP and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Nov 27, and we replied on Dec 3. In addition, ICA officers have contacted him and clarified that the ICA does not use any public address system to direct traffic at Old Woodlands Checkpoint.

On the potential impact of pollution caused by the diversion of motorcycles to Admiralty Road West, we appreciate his feedback and note that this is a valid concern. Hence we are working closely with the National Environment Agency to address this problem.

Checkpoint re-opening 'The nightmare will haunt us again.'

MR KRISHNAPILLAI RAVEEOHRAN: 'Residents of flats facing the recently re-opened old checkpoint at the Causeway are now being subjected to the incessant noise of the public address system used by the officers directing heavy vehicles through. The din echoes through the neighbouring flats. That may not be the end for residents in the area. Soon, motorcycles will be directed through Admiralty Road West again, so we will have to gird ourselves for the onslaught of carbon monoxide in the early mornings from hundreds of motorcycles. When it was stopped, I thought that that was the end of the nightmare and that residents like me would not have to live with it ever again. Well, the nightmare will be back to haunt us again.'
