Response to ' New IC issued when old IC wasn’t lost ‘ (Mypaper, 8 Jun 2010)

Investigation into status of IC application is ongoing

Mypaper

15 Jun 2010

I REFER to Mr Jonathan Lim Leap Ming’s letter, “New IC issued when old IC wasn’t lost” (my paper, June 8).

We are puzzled as to how Mr Lim arrived at that conclusion regarding his mother’s identity card (IC).

Mr Lim had written to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) to check on the status of his mother’s application for a replacement IC.

The ICA was unable to accede to his request nor comment on the matter as there is an ongoing investigation by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on matters pertaining to his mother’s IC.

Where any clarification is required on this matter, the SPF will liaise with the ICA directly.

The ICA would like to remind readers that it is an offence, under the National Registration Act, for any person to be in possession of an IC other than his own, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse. This has also been communicated to Mr Lim previously.

New IC issued when old IC wasn’t lost

MY 65-YEAR-OLD mother is mentally ill. For safety reasons, I keep her identity card (IC) and my immediate family is aware of this.

On Feb 4, I went to a police post on my mother’s behalf to report a change in her address.

To my surprise, the police informed me that the address could not be changed as my mother’s IC had been reported lost, and there was a pending application for a replacement IC.

As I still had my mother’s IC, I filed reports with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the police.

The investigations by both parties are still under way. My mother told me that she received a new IC from ICA, but is unable to show it to me. I am now unsure of the validity of her old IC.

As it was never lost, how could ICA issue her a replacement IC?
