Joint Operation Between Police & ICA Strike Shophouse Unit Used As Illegal Gaming Centre
In a joint operation between Bedok Police Division and the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), a total of eight men, aged between 34 and 57, were arrested for offences under the Common Gaming House Act.
2 On 12 October 2010 at about 4.30pm, officers from both Home Team agencies raided a shophouse unit along Lorong 13 Geylang and placed the eight suspects under arrest for operating and gaming in an illegal gaming centre. Illegal jackpot machines and improvised computers used for on-line casino gaming were also discovered inside the said unit. Cash of about $1,900, 29 jackpot machines, a horse racing machine and other gambling-related paraphernalia were also seized as case exhibits.
3 The operator of the illegal gaming centre will be charged in Court on 14 October 2010 for the offence of Managing a Place to be used as a Common Gaming House under Section 4(1)(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act, Chapter 49. Any person convicted of this offence shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years.
4 The remaining suspects will also be charged in Court on 14 October 2010 for the offence of Gaming in a Common Gaming House under Section 7 of the Common Gaming Houses Act, Chapter 49. Any person convicted of this offence shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or to both.
5 Acting Commander of Bedok Police Division, Superintendent of Police Wilson Lim expressed his appreciation to ICA for their strong support in the operation. He added, “Such enforcement actions are necessary to weed out illicit activities, and Police will not hesitate to take tough enforcement action against operators and players involved in such illegal gaming activities.”
