‘Tactical’ Accessories or Fashion Statement?

Leather wallets and belts are practical accessories commonly used by men. The latest designs to hit the local runways for summer 2011 could be the brown belt and wallets that came through our Changi Airport yesterday. What is so fashionable about these items? Was it the elaborate design or the high quality genuine leather that attracts the attention of our ‘fashionistas’ at the checkpoints?

2.     On Thursday, 26 May 2011 at about 2.15pm, officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were conducting checks at Changi Airport Terminal 1. From amongst the many travellers who were passing through the checkpoint, the ICA profiling experts spotted a suspicious male traveller who had just arrived from Dhaka.

3.     As with all other travellers, the 41-year-old Bangladeshi man waited patiently at the baggage belt for his checked-in luggage to arrive. He was observed to have collected a huge parcel box at the baggage belt, and was making his way towards the exit when he was stopped by the officers.

4.     During the checks, the officers noticed a paper bag in the parcel box. When questioned what was in the paper bag, the man started to fluster nervously. He claimed that the bag contained belts and wallets which were proven true when the officers opened the bag. However, the sharp-eyed officers were not prepared to let the subject leave yet. What was wrong?

5.     Upon closer examination, the officers observed that the leather belts and wallets were bulky and distorted. Their suspicion was further aroused when they noticed uneven stitching marks on them. Upon removing the stitches, the officers were greeted by a ‘weed-like’ substance that was stuffed inside the leather belts and inner layers of the wallets. Preliminary tests conducted by CNB officers revealed that the ‘weed-like’ substance is suspected to be the controlled drug, cannabis. CNB has since taken over the case for further investigations.

6.     Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security. The enhanced security checks are critical to our nation’s security. We have tightened our security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands. The same methods of concealment used by contraband smugglers may be used by terrorists to smuggle arms and explosives to carry out attacks in Singapore.
