'ICA explored adding a pathway to facilitate the clearance of cars after the security checks.'

Mr KOH WEE SING, Head, Public & Internal Communications, Corporate Communications Division, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA): 'At the Woodlands checkpoint, the converging exit pathway after the immigration booths and the speed regulating humps form part of our security framework for clearing vehicles entering Singapore ('Homeward choke' by Mr Rodney Tan'; Sept 27). The ICA is constantly exploring ways to improve checkpoint infrastructure and work processes to enhance the experience of travellers without compromising border security. To alleviate the traffic situation at Woodlands Checkpoint, ICA has adopted several measures to facilitate the traffic flow during peak periods. These include the multimodal or flexible use of lanes to clear cars more efficiently, and opening the old Woodlands checkpoint to quicken the overall rate of clearing vehicles. After receiving public feedback, ICA also explored the feasibility of adding a pathway to facilitate the clearance of cars after the security checks during peak hours. The outcome of the trial has been promising and we will monitor its implementation closely. We value feedback from travellers like Mr Tan.'

MR RODNEY TAN: 'My friends and I travel to Johor Baru regularly for golf and the Immigration and Customs processes on the outward journey are usually smooth, partly because more lanes are readily opened when traffic increases. I cannot say the same for the return journey to Singapore. Much of the congestion is caused by traffic from several lanes being channelled into a single lane before the final exit in Woodlands. The problem is compounded by speed-deterrent strips. Can the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) open more lanes to ease congestion after cars pass the final Customs check? If this is done, traffic flow will be smoother and quicker.'
