New Blocks on the Street?
Our residential blocks are a common sight and it is nothing unusual. They are strong and sturdy and are home to many families in Singapore. However, officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority witnessed new “blocks” at Woodlands Checkpoint seemingly made of vegetable material. What ‘blocks’ did they exactly see?
2. On 17 August 2012, at about 7.15am, ICA officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint directed an arriving Malaysian-registered motorcycle for random checks. The officers’ suspicions were aroused when the 31-year-old lone male Malaysian rider avoided eye contact with officers.
3. As the officers conducted physical inspection, they noticed something hidden in the raincoat pants which were placed in the driver’s backpack. Upon unfolding the raincoat pants, officers detected nine blocks of brownish vegetable matter, suspected to be controlled drugs - cannabis. In total, the blocks weigh approximately 470g with a street value of more than SGD15, 000.
4. The subject was immediately detained and together with the seized exhibits, he was handed over to Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for further investigations. The subject is currently being investigated for unauthorised importation of a controlled drug. The minimum penalty for the unauthorised importation of cannabis would be twenty years’ imprisonment and fifteen strokes of the cane.
5. Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security. The enhanced security checks are critical to our nation’s security. We have tightened our security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands.
