Sunblock-ed

For many of us living in sunny Singapore, sunblock is a must-have as protection against the sun. For a traveller who had just arrived in Singapore, his sunblock failed to protect him against the eagle-eyed ICA officers.

2.    On 26 November 2012, at about 3.30am, the officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) had spotted a male Bangladeshi who had just arrived from Dhaka. As he walked towards the Green Channel at Terminal 2, Arrival Hall of Changi Airport, he was approached and directed for routine baggage checks, just like any other traveller.

3.    During the course of checks, our experienced and vigilant officers noticed anomalies showed up in the scanned images of a bottle stated as sun block talcum powder. Not leaving anything to chances, our meticulous officers removed the plastic and conducted a detailed check on his belongings.

4.    When the officers tried to pour the content out of the bottle, it did not come out readily. Our officers then made an incision at the mouth of the bottle to conduct thorough check and found some greenish substance. The subject was immediately detained and together with the seized exhibits, he was handed over to Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for further investigations.

5.    Preliminary tests by the CNB revealed that the greenish substance found in the bottle was cannabis, weighing approximately 197.3g with a street value of about SGD 6,510. The subject is currently being investigated for unauthorised importation of a controlled drug. The minimum penalty for the unauthorised importation of cannabis would be twenty years’ imprisonment and fifteen strokes of the cane.

6.    Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security. The enhanced security checks are critical to our nation’s security. We have tightened our security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands.
