Response to media queries on incident at Woodlands checkpoint on 5 July 2018

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers have arrested the 31-year-old male Malaysian lorry driver, Asrul Nizam bin Jamil on 6 July 2018. Investigations are ongoing,
2 On 5 July 2018 at about 2.50am, Asrul Nizam bin Jamil had abandoned his lorry at one of the cargo checking bays at Woodlands Checkpoint after he had cleared immigration. His lorry was in the midst of being subjected to further checks when he left the cargo checking bay. ICA officers subsequently found approximately 5,000 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in the lorry.
3 The ICA would like to remind all travellers using the checkpoints to comply with directions given by an authorised officer for regulating his movement and conduct under the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act.

His lorry was in the midst of being subjected to further checks when he left the cargo checking bay. Checkpoint operations were temporarily suspended to locate the driver. ICA officers subsequently found approximately 5,000 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in the lorry.
