Man Fined For Verbally Abusing ICA Officer
On 1 August 2017 at about 3.50am, a 27-year-old male Singaporean Tay Chun Aik drove his car from Malaysia towards the Woodlands checkpoint and sought arrival clearance. He was directed by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers for further checks.
2. During the course of checks, Tay was uncooperative and used abusive words at an ICA officer. Tay was referred to Police for investigations.
3. Tay was charged in Court and was sentenced on 21 November and fined $1,500 for using abusive language against a public servant under Section 6(1)(a) of the Protection from Harassment Act, Chapter 256A, punishable under Section 6(3) of the same Act. The ICA takes a serious view against persons who obstruct our officers from carrying out their duties or cause them physical and/or verbal harm.
4. Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security. The security checks are critical to our nation’s security. The ICA will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands. Travellers are reminded to cooperate with our officers in helping to ensure that Singapore remains safe and secure.
