3,346 Cartons Of Contraband Cigarettes Seized At Woodlands Checkpoint
On 6 May 2016 at about 5pm, a Malaysia-registered lorry, driven by a 39-year-old Malaysian man, was directed by officers of the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) for further checks upon arrival at the Woodlands Checkpoint. The lorry was carrying a consignment declared to contain 100 rolls of ‘Single-Face Roll Papers’.
2. During further checks, the ICA officers found 3,346 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes concealed in the modified compartment on the roof of the lorry. The driver, the contraband cigarettes and the lorry were handed over to the Singapore Customs for further investigations. The vehicle used in the commission of such offences is liable to be forfeited.
3. The potential duty and Goods and Services Tax of the contraband cigarettes amounted to $259,650 and $26,140 respectively.
4. Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's safety and security. The security checks are critical to our nation’s security. We will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands. The same methods of concealment used by contraband smugglers may be used by terrorists to smuggle arms and explosives to carry out attacks in Singapore.
