SIR Officers Foil Attempt to Depart Illegally
SIR OFFICERS FOIL ATTEMPT TO DEPART ILLEGALLY
SIR officers successfully arrested four immigration offenders when they tried to depart Singapore illegally by car on 15 Oct 2002 at Woodlands Checkpoint. The Malaysian driver was also caught.
2 At about 2200 hours, the 19-year old driver was signalled by SIR officers to stop for checks at the Departure Section at Woodlands Checkpoint. During the search, SIR officers found four persons, consisting of one male and three females, hiding inside the car boot.
3 Preliminary investigations revealed that the four Thai nationals, aged between 26 and 35 years old, are believed to be immigration offenders. All the arrested persons will be charged in court.
4 In the first eight months of this year, about 9,400 immigration offenders were arrested. Singapore Immigration and Registration takes a serious view of attempts by foreigners to enter into or depart from Singapore illegally. Under the Immigration Act (Cap 133), the human smuggler faces a mandatory jail term of up to 5 years and a minimum of 3 strokes of the cane. An immigration offender faces a jail term of up to 6 months plus a minimum of 3 strokes of the cane and in lieu of caning, a fine of up to $6,000/-.
5 Illegal immigrants pose a security problem in Singapore. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring the security and safety of Singapore. The public is advised not to provide employment or provide them with a place to stay.
