Streamlining of New Student's Pass Application for Private Schools' Students
A foreigner who wishes to pursue full-time studies in Singapore is required to apply for a Student's Pass (STP). SIR adopts a balanced approach in facilitating application for STPs from foreigners, in order to address our security, law and order and other concerns.
2 From 1 Nov 2002, the following facilitative measures will be introduced for foreigners applying to study undergraduate/postgraduate degree courses registered with the Ministry of Education in private schools in Singapore:
- STPs valid for one year will be issued instead of the current six-monthly STPs. If the students maintain a good record, upon renewal, the STP will be extended to be valid for the remaining course duration.
- Security Deposit is no longer required; and
- Applicants from the People's Republic of China will be allowed to submit their applications directly in Singapore, instead of submitting them in China.
3 SIR has also made other improvements applicable to all private school students. These include increasing the minimum duration of the STP from three to six months and simplifying the documents required for the STP applications. Other service initiatives are the installation of "Drop-In Boxes" for submission of fresh STP application forms at SIR Building and the inclusion of a documentation checklist in the application forms to assist applicants complete the application forms.
4 The new facilitative measures are in line with the Economic Review Committee's recommendations to help develop Singapore's Education Industry through the streamlining of student visa requirements and processing. SIR will continue to work closely with our strategic partners as part of our on-going efforts to further streamline STP application and processing
5 SIR would like to remind foreigners holding STPs to adhere to the conditions laid down in the STP and not to violate them.
