SIR officers foil 2 attempts to enter illegally within one week
CASE 1
On 18 Dec 2002, SIR officers successfully arrested two immigration offenders at Woodlands Checkpoint when they tried to enter Singapore illegally by car at about 0600 hours. A Malaysian driver was also arrested.
2 The 24-year old male Malaysian driver was signalled by the SIR officers to stop for checks at the Arrival Section of Woodlands Checkpoint. Two males were found hiding in the speaker compartment behind the backseat of the vehicle. The driver and the two persons were immediately placed under arrest. The car was also seized.
3 Preliminary investigations revealed that the two Myanmar nationals, aged 20 and 30 years old respectively, came from Malaysia with the intention to seek illegal employment in Singapore. All the arrested persons will be charged in court. We will also apply to court for the forfeiture of the car.
CASE 2
4 Just 5 days ago on 13 Dec 2002 at about 2115 hours, another 20-year old Malaysia driver was arrested for attempting to smuggle one male illegal immigrant into Singapore.
5 The human smuggler was charged in court on 14 Dec 2002. He pleaded guilty for trafficking illegal immigrant and was sentenced to 27 months imprisonment and 3 strokes of the cane. The illegal immigrant, a 24-year old Myanmar national, was convicted of illegal entry and sentenced to one month imprisonment and 4 strokes of the cane.
6 Singapore Immigration & Registration takes a serious view of attempts by foreigners to enter into or depart from Singapore illegally. In the first eight months of this year, about 9,400 immigration offenders were arrested. Under the Immigration Act (Cap 133), the trafficker faces a mandatory jail term of up to 5 years and a minimum of 3 strokes of the cane. For illegal entry and overstaying, the offender faces a jail term of up to 6 months plus a minimum of 3 strokes of the cane and in lieu of caning, a fine of up to $6,000/-.
7 Illegal immigrants pose a security problem in Singapore. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring the security and safety of Singapore.
