Enhanced Checks at Land Checkpoints

Our checkpoints are the first line of defence against terrorist threats. They help prevent the entry of persons or goods that might pose a danger to the security of Singapore. In line with a general increase of the threat level worldwide, the current enhanced checks at the land checkpoints are part of the ongoing efforts to enhance security in Singapore.

Traffic situation at the land checkpoints

2 SIR has been monitoring the traffic situation at both checkpoints closely since the checks on all vehicles started on 14 Mar 2003. The traffic situation at Tuas Checkpoint has remained smooth even though clearance time has increased slightly. At Woodlands Checkpoint, the high volume of motorcycle traffic during morning peak hours has affected other modes of transport at the Causeway.

3 The Home Team has beefed up its resources to conduct the checks so as to minimise delays and inconvenience. More officers have been deployed to conduct checks. Additional lanes have also been opened.

4 During peak hours, some car lanes have been converted for motorcycle clearance. To ease the traffic congestion along the Causeway during the morning peak hours, Police officers have been deployed to regulate the traffic to ensure that motorcycles do not occupy all the lanes and obstruct other modes of transport.

Advice to all travellers

5 Some congestion, especially during the morning peak hours and weekends, is inevitable. All travellers intending to use the Tuas and Woodlands Checkpoints are advised to plan their travel carefully to avoid possible traffic congestion, particularly during the peak hours and weekends. On weekdays, the morning arrival peak hours are from 5.30am to 9.30am on the arrival side and from 4pm to 9pm in the evenings for the departure side. On weekends, the peak hours are from late afternoon onwards for departure and early evening onwards for arrival.

6 To avoid the congestion at the checkpoints, travellers are encouraged to car pool or make use of public transport instead. Travellers departing Singapore by land will be able to check the traffic situation at Tuas and Woodlands Checkpoints from the LTA's Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS) installed along AYE and BKE respectively.

7 Travellers can also call the Check-Tips Hotline at 6863-0117 to find out the latest traffic conditions at the arrival and departure sections of Tuas and Woodlands Checkpoints. When necessary, announcements on traffic situation will be made through TrafficWatch. Travellers are advised to tune in to radio stations for the latest announcements.

8 While the Home Team is mindful of the need to facilitate the movement of travellers, goods and vehicles through the checkpoints, the need to ensure the security of our country may require travellers to put up with some inconvenience and a longer clearance time. We seek your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
