10 Immigration Offenders Nabbed in a Series of Raids by ICA

On 28 Apr 2003, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers mounted a series of operation against immigration offenders at HDB flats, a forested area and a petrol kiosk. The series of raids resulted in the arrest of a total of 10 immigration offenders.

2 Four overstayers, one male Pakistan national and three female Nepal nationals, were arrested in a raid conducted at a HDB unit in Toa Payoh and in Yishun. In a separate operation, two female Thai nationals were arrested at a forested area in Yishun for overstaying. The women were found hiding in a make-shift tent and believed to be engaged in prostitution. ICA officers also conducted a check at a petrol kiosk at Newton Road and found three male illegal immigrants who are Nepal nationals and one Sri Lankan national that is an overstayer working illegally as car washers there. The 10 immigration offenders (5 males and 5 females) arrested are aged between 25 and 38 years old.

3 ICA takes a serious view of attempts by foreigners to overstay or enter Singapore illegally and would prosecute them and others who abet their illegal stay or entry into Singapore. Under the Immigration Act (Cap 133), the penalties for overstaying or illegal entry are a jail term of up to six months plus a minimum of 3 strokes of the cane.

4 ICA will not let up on eliminating the presence of immigration offenders in Singapore. "Although the number of immigration offenders (illegal immigrants and overstayers) situation has improved, there are still foreigners who are trying to seek illegal employment or had overstayed. The public is reminded that it is an offence to offer shelter and employment to immigration offenders," said Mr Wong Kong Wa, Commander(Field Operations).
