Man Caught for Smuggling Prohibited Pork at Tuas

On 15 May 2003, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority Officer Leong Kwok Yuen stopped a Malaysia registered lorry carrying a consignment of empty polystyrene boxes at the Tuas Cargo Clearance Centre for a routine check. Upon inspecting the consignment, about 1.75 ton of pig intestines and parts were found hidden in 63 white polystyrene boxes and brown paper cartons. The lone Malay driver, a Malaysian, male, aged 33 years old was arrested for attempting to smuggle the pig intestines and parts into Singapore. The import of any pork and pork products originating from Malaysia is prohibited under the Wholesome Meat and Fish Act. This is the largest smuggling attempt of pig intestines and parts being detected at Tuas Checkpoint since it started operations in 1998.

At about 1.15 am, Officer Leong stopped the lorry for a routine check. As he requested the driver to remove some boxes for examination, he observed that the driver became increasingly nervous and clumsy. This prompted him to conduct a thorough examination where he uncovered some undeclared brown carton boxes hidden amongst the white polystyrene boxes. Upon inspecting one of the brown cartons boxes, he found frozen pig intestines. Further examination resulted in the detection of about 1.75 ton of pig intestines and parts hidden in 63 cartons of white polystyrene boxes and brown paper cartons. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused was paid RM$500 to bring in the pig intestines and parts into Singapore. He claimed that a Malaysian friend had requested him in Johor Bahru to deliver the consignment of polystyrene boxes and the contraband to an unknown person at Penjuru Road, Jurong.

Under the Wholesome Meat and Fish Act, any person who imports any meat product without a licence shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $50,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years or to both and in the case of second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding $100,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or to both.

The accused, together with all the exhibits were handed over to AVA for further investigations. The accused will be charged in court tomorrow.
