ICA Officers Nabbed Malaysian Drug Trafficker at Woodlands Checkpoint

On 11 Oct 2003 at about 1810hrs, Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers stopped and conducted a check on a 23-year-old Malaysian male Chinese at the Woodlands Checkpoint motorcycle lane. The male suspect was found looking very nervous and this aroused the suspicion of the ICA officers, who brought him to the Duty Office for a more thorough check.

2 ICA officers discovered a total of 550 Ecstasy tablets, 33.97gms of Ice and 800 Erimin-5 tablets in his cargo pants pocket and jacket pocket. ICA officers immediately placed the rider under arrest and referred the case to CNB. The motorcycle was put through a thorough search but nothing incriminating was found.

3 The male suspect who is unemployed was subject to an instant urine test, and his urine tested positive for amphetamines. Further investigations revealed that he had brought the drugs in for his supplier.

4 He will be investigated into the offence of importing a controlled for the purpose of trafficking. If convicted, he will face a minimum sentence of 5 years imprisonment and 5 strokes of the cane.

5 In view of the current global situation, enforcement agencies at all entry and exit points are working closely together to step up security inspections of all persons, goods and vehicles entering or leaving Singapore. As a result, drug traffickers can also expect to face a heightened gauntlet of security checks and measures at our entry and exit points.
